Epstein Barr Virus – When to Call the Doctor

Published by Elizabeth at 5:18 pm under Complications of mono

It is advisable to see a doctor if you have signs or symptoms of Epstein Barr – the virus that causes mononucleosis or glandular fever. Diagnosis of the illness by a doctor is important to make sure it is not another medical condition that may require more extensive medical evaluation and treatment.

Also call or visit your doctor or hospital immediately if you have these symptoms:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • A severe sore throat
  • Drooling or if you are unable to swallow your saliva
  • Inability to drink
  • Visible pus deposits or a purulent discharge on your tonsils
  • Fever over 104 degrees F (40 degrees C)
  • Seizures
  • Severe headaches
  • Potential signs of a ruptured spleen like pain in the left upper part of your abdomen (under the left chest), feeling lightheaded, feeling like your heart is beating fast and hard, bleeding more easily than usual and having trouble breathing.

It is also advisable to get advice if:

  • You have a child less than 1 year suffering from Epstein Barr symptoms
  • Your Epstein Barr is not starting to get better after a couple of weeks
