Hi Amanda,

Sorry to hear your daughter is not well. She is on an excellent regime of diet and supplements so should bounce back within a week or so. The coconut oil is a good anti-viral along with nutrients like vitamin C, zinc and the probiotics.

The virus is spread via saliva so it is important that your daughter does not share drinks, eating utensils, towels, lip balm etc with her siblings. Good, regular handwashing is also important. The virus is most contagious in the acute stage of the illness but can still be transmitted weeks or months after symptoms have disappeared. The most common source of infection is believed to be people with no symptoms who shed the virus periodically from their throat.

Since you have had mono before, you cannot get it from your daughter. It is possible the latent virus in your body can be re-activated during stress or when you are run down. Eating well, getting plenty of sleep and exercising regularly will help keep the virus at bay.

I hope this answers your questions.

Hi Elizabeth,
I am so grateful for your web site and the helpful information you are sharing in the comments section. I am writing because my nine-year-old daughter was diagnosed with mono this week. She is a very healthy child and our diet is high in whole foods, organic vegetables and healthy supplements to add vitamin d, probiotics, b vitamins and essential fatty acids. It has been so difficult to watch our usually vibrant child feeling so miserable.
We are on day 7 of battling this virus. My daughter has been drinking broth with nutritional yeast dissolved in it, herbal teas and lemon water. I've also been giving her coconut oil as I have read that can be highly beneficial in battling this virus. Do you have any experience with that?
I previously had mono in my teens, but I am noticing that some of my glands are feeling enlarged. I am concerned because I am currently pregnant and am wondering how re-exposure to the active virus might affect me. I am also wondering how I can best prevent my two other children from contracting mono. I've read that the virus can remain dormant for up to two months, that adults like myself who carry EBV can have asymptomatic resurgences during which time they may be contagious, and I have received conflicting information from the nurses and other sources regarding how long my child will remain contagious. Any information you can offer to help us sort this out would be so greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Warmly,

Amanda

Hi Mary,

Your daughter sounds very ill with the Epstein Barr virus. Most cases do not last so long in this acute stage.

I think the first priority is to get her nourished and re-hydrated. If she is not consuming enough water or food, it is going to worsen the headaches and abdominal pain. I would aim for a liquid only diet of small amounts of broths, soups, herbal teas and freshly squeezed vegetable juices. Even just small regular sips will help her body to absorb the fluid and nutrients.

She will also need to be on some essential nutrients like vitamin C, zinc, magnesium and the B complex. These are crucial in helping her body fight the virus. Again if she has problems swallowing then a powdered or liquid supplement is probably best for her.

Often the Epstein Barr virus affects the liver, causing nausea and vomiting. I think she does need to do some gentle liver cleansing to overcome this problem. Even just starting her off on some lemon and ginger tea would be good. Epsom salt baths would be good for her abdominal pain. You could also try hot packs over her spleen and liver area to see if they help.

All these techniques are outlined in my e-book and have been used with good results by many patients who have had similar conditions. With the e-book, you also get free email support for 30 days if you need further guidance on your individual concerns.

I hope this answers your questions.

Kind Regards

Elizabeth

I am at my wit's end. On April 10, 2012, my 14 yr old daughter came home from school. She said her nose was burning and did not feel well. Within an hour, she was very ill and lethargic. For the next two days, she couldn't breathe out of her nose and had a severe sore throat. We took her to the Dr who said she had a sinus infection and gave her a shot of Rocephin and Depo-Medrol. We were told she would feel better in 24-48 hrs. Within 72 hrs, we saw no improvement. We continued with the prescribed antibiotics and waited a week to bring her back to the Dr (we were trying to give the medicine time to work). She was also having severe headaches. They Dr did a CT of her sinuses and diagnosed her again with Sinusitis. She was given another 4mg steroid shot and we were sent on our way. My daughter continued to have severe headaches, face pain, sore throat and extreme fatigue. Again, we waited a few days to see if the medicine would work. The 5th day after our 2nd Dr visit, she developed terrible abdominal pain, LLQ. I was suspicious of Mono and took her back to the Dr. He did the test and she was Positive. That was two weeks ago. She has lost almost 20 lbs, won't eat and barely drinking. Her left sided pain has not let up. I forgot to mention she has constant nausea, and has for 4 weeks. I don't know what to do. Is this par for the course with Mono? Should I be worried the LLQ pain is related to her spleen or bowels? I just dont know anymore. Any advice/suggestions/insight will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Peter,

Sorry to hear your little boy is ill with mono. Fever is the body's way of killing off infections. Unless the fever is really high, (above 104) I recommend my patients do not not suppress fever with medication. Letting it run its course will probably shorten its duration.
You can keep your child comfortable with some tepid sponge baths and lots of fluids.

If the virus persists I would recommend you get him onto some nutrients to fight the virus (vitamin C, zinc, echinacea etc).

Best Wishes
Elizabeth

Hello, I have a 6yr old son who was just diagnosed with mono after his peditrician did blood work because he has had a fever for 5 days straight ranging from 102 to 104.5. Tylenol and motrin seem to bring it down but as soon as they wear off the temp go's right back up almost to the minute when the medicine stops working. His doc says its fine and to just keep giving him the tylenol motrin until they stop. Is it normal for the fever to last this long 5 days? I'm starting to really worry, how long will they last for? Other symtoms are runny nose and diarrhea other then that he seems fine and is bouncing around the living room even though were trying to keep him still. Giving him gummie vitamins and lots of orange juice to try and help him get better soon. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, A nervous Dad

Hi Polo,

Thank you for your post. Sorry to hear you are ill. It does sound like you may be suffering from mono but it is worth getting a blood test from your doctor to check.

Fortunately there is a lot you can do with natural therapies to help your recovery. Your priority is to get your immune system fighting off the virus with high dose vitamin C, zinc, and vitamin A. You will also need to repair
your adrenal glands with magnesium and the B complex. Lots of rest and sleep is essential.

A low carb, high protein diet with lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and pure water is important. Some anti-inflammatory foods and anti-viral herbs will also help. If your symptoms persist you may need to do some liver cleansing in order to clear the virus from your system.

All these techniques are outlined in my e-book and have been used with good results by many patients who have had similar conditions. With the e-book, you also get free email support for 30 days if you need further guidance on your individual concerns.

I hope this answers your questions.

Kind Regards

Hi Kalev,

Thank you for your email. Sorry to hear you are ill with the Epstein Barr virus. It can be a very frustrating time. EBV is a latent virus that stays in your body for life after the initial infection. It can relapse when you run down or stressed. Symptoms can include fevers, painful lymph nodes, fatigue, sore throat and body aches.

Fortunately there is a lot you can do with natural therapies to help your recovery. Your priority is to get your immune system fighting off the virus with high dose vitamin C, zinc, and vitamin A. You will also need to repair your adrenal glands with magnesium and the B complex.
