Glandular Fever and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can be debilitating conditions that have similar symptoms. Persistent or relapsing fatigue, sore throat, mild fever and painful lymph nodes are common to both conditions. Sometimes symptoms of muscle weakness, joint pain, headaches, sleep problems and gastrointestinal discomfort are also present.

The Epstein Barr virus that causes glandular fever has been shown to trigger CFS. Other causes of CFS are bacterial infection like mycoplasma, Lymes or Chlamydia pneumonia, chemical exposure and stress.

Glandular fever and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients both express failure of the body’s main defence systems including gastrointestinal, liver, adrenal and immune systems. CFS patients can’t detoxify or eliminate toxins and reactive compounds from food which ultimately induce inflammation, cell dysfunction and metabolic poisoning.

Fortunately natural therapies have a lot to offer in the treatment of these immune conditions.

The first step is a bowel and liver detoxification program. This can be undertaken using herbal anti-parasitics and liver cleansing herbs. Avoiding allergens and irritants like alcohol, coffee, sugar, excess fat and chemicals is essential. Re-inoculating the gastrointestinal flora with some probiotics like acidophillus and bifido bacteria is important.

The next step for effective glandular fever and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome treatment is to support immunity with nutrients like vitamin C, zinc, vitamin A, and selenium. Herbal immune stimulants like echinacea, astragalus and olive leaf extract are also beneficial.

Stress management and adrenal support is the last vital step for glandular fever and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients. This includes supporting the adrenal glands with the B complex and magnesium, getting adequate rest and a good nights sleep and doing some regular gentle exercise or deep breathing. Yoga, meditation and visualisation have proved to be useful to combat stress.

Bowel problems like constipation, loose stools, abdominal pain and wind can be caused from Epstein Barr IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). This condition may result from EBV infecting the gastrointestinal tract or from other triggers like stress, a change in eating habits or prolonged inactivity.

Fortunately there are some natural remedies that can be used to help EBV irritable bowel syndrome:

- firstly keep up an intake of 2-3 litres of water a day. Drink some of this as hot water which is very cleansing for the bowels. A hot water and lemon juice first thing in the morning can stimulate the bowels.

- make sure you are getting plenty of fibre through leafy greens, salads, vegetables, low carb fruits and nuts. Adding some psyllium husks can help if you are prone to constipation.

- taking some probiotics like acidophillus and bifido bacteria can alleviate bloating and help digestion during Epstein Barr IBS. Good bowel function depends on the right balance of bacterial flora in the bowel. The right balance of bacteria is also essential for optimal immunity.

- adding some healthy oils like a tablespoon or two of flaxseed oil or olive oil can help lubricate the stools.

- increasing your dosage of magnesium and/or vitamin C can draw water into the bowel and loosen hard stools. Dosing up on vitamin C is my first line of treatment for patients with the constipation often seen in this condition as it is also an immune stimulant.

- for abdominal pain or discomfort, a heat pack over the abdominal area or an Epsom salt bath can relieve symptoms.

- for stress-induced Epstein Barr IBS, plenty of rest and relaxation are essential. Supporting the adrenal glands with some nutrients like the B complex, vitamin C and magnesium is important. Deep breathing, yoga, tai chi and gentle exercise should be practised regularly.
- if symptoms of Epstein Barr IBS persist then a gentle gastrointestinal and liver cleanser is recommended.
If you or a loved one are experiencing the pain of Epstein Barr IBS, then there is a lot you can do with natural therapies. For more information on treating EBV please refer to the e-book “Nature’s Amazing Mononucleosis Cures” by qualified naturopath Elizabeth Noble.

Glandular fever digestion is often marked by unpleasant symptoms like bloating, gas, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation and loose stools. This is because the virus can attack the walls of the gastrointestinal tract and adversely effect the health of your immune system.

Your intestines play host to your body’s largest mass of immune-cell-populated lymphoid tissue, known as gut-associated lymphoid tissue, or GALT. Your gut’s mucosal barrier is equally important to your immune system, charged with keeping unwanted organisms and substances at bay while supplying your body with the nutrients it needs to thrive. So it’s easy to see how glandular fever digestion and total-body health can come under fire if this barrier becomes irritated and weakened.

Unfortunately, a number of dietary saboteurs pave the way to a so-called “leaky gut” and all the nasty glandular fever digestion problems that come with it. Gluten is one of the most notorious culprits, with studies showing that this wheat-based component of cookies, bread and other carb-laden treats is associated with greater discomfort, bloating and tiredness, even in subjects without a major genetic sensitivity to it. Problems with glandular fever digestion can improve by reducing or eliminating gluten.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs)—the byproducts of a series of chemical reactions between proteins, fats and sugars in your body—also come along with increased refined carbohydrate consumption. While these trouble-making glycotoxins are usually quarantined by your intestinal wall and eliminated, a weak mucosal barrier as seen during glandular fever digestion could mean that more of these AGEs wreak havoc on your body, triggering an imbalanced inflammatory response and aggravating food sensitivities. In this way poor glandular fever digestion can cause a flare up in symptoms of inflammation like a sore throat, aching muscles and swollen lymph glands.

Even your morning cup of coffee can impact intestinal permeability over the long haul—as can some popular food additives, which are known to play a significant role in food sensitivities and impact immune health. These types of processed foods should be eliminated for the sake of good glandular fever digestion.

So how can you keep your digestive system and your immune function strong without giving up the foods that you love? Luckily, a steady supply of the right nutrients will support your mucosal barrier’s natural regenerative cycles—and a carefully selected blend of natural compounds can ensure that your gut is equipped to handle the dietary dangers it’s faced with every day.

For example, low dietary levels of L-glutamine have been shown to contribute to intestinal permeability, while supplementation boosts barrier function. Deglycyrrhizinated licorice can also enhance gastrointestinal health, while n-acetyl glucosamine and marshmallow are involved in the formation and defense of the intestinal mucosa’s protective cover.

Berberine balances digestive inflammatory responses, cabbage and phosphatidylcholine support the GI tract, while slippery elm stimulates protective mucous secretion—and gamma oryzanol offers antioxidant support to keep gastric acid secretion balanced. All these nutrients can improve glandular fever digestion and immune function.

You can find these critical gut-strengthening nutrients for glandular fever digestion combined in supplements like VRP’s GI Cell Support. For added defense, a comprehensive probiotic that contains Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum—can also improve mucosal barrier function and glandular fever digestion.

Glandular fever hepatitis can occur when the Epstein Barr virus infects the liver. Symptoms of glandular fever hepatitis can include liver enlargement, abdominal pain, nausea, jaundice, dark urine, headaches and malaise. Fortunately there is a host of herbs and nutrients that can reduce liver inflammation and help the body recover from this nasty virus.

The most popular herb for glandular fever hepatitis is milk thistle (Silybum marianum). Milk thistle has been shown in numerous studies to have liver-protecting properties.

In a recent randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial, Silymarin was investigated in patients with acute liver inflammation as appears in glandular fever hepatitis. Study subjects were chosen based on symptoms of acute clinical hepatitis and levels of the liver enzyme alanine aminotransferase (ALT), which were greater than 2.5 times above the upper limit of normal. The subjects were supplemented with 140 mg of Silymarin three times per day or a vitamin placebo for 4 weeks with an additional 4 week follow-up. The researchers evaluated symptoms of hepatitis and liver function tests on days 2, 4 and 7, and weeks 2, 4, and 8.

The results showed that the subjects receiving Silymarin had a quicker resolution of symptoms. More specifically, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin caused by elevated bilirubin) and scleral icterus (yellowing of the whites of the eyes) improved more quickly. There was also a reduction in levels of indirect bilirubin, which is the yellow breakdown product from heme in red blood cells. In addition, no adverse events were reported.

The study authors concluded, “Patients receiving Silymarin had earlier improvement in subjective and clinical markers of biliary excretion. Standard recommended doses of Silymarin are safe and may be potentially effective in improving symptoms of acute clinical hepatitis.”

If you are suffering from glandular fever hepatitis then you may benefit from taking milk thistle for liver protection. In addition there are many nutrients, foods and herbs that can support your liver health and get you feeling better.

It is essential during EBV treatment that the issue of worry and stress be addressed. Ongoing worry and stress can suppress the immune system to the point where EBV treatment (Epstein Barr Virus) becomes a losing battle.

Here’s some information from the Highwood Health Retreat on how to deal with worry:
Probably the three biggest things people worry about are other people in their lives, their health and finances. So, how can we avoid being consumed over worry in these important areas of our lives? Here are the ten tips. Maybe one or more can help you.

Ten Tips to Stop Worrying During EBV Treatment:

1. Do something. The most obvious solution maybe simply to do something that will remove the worry. For example, for EBV treatment you could see a naturopath, design a healthy diet, take time off work if you are not coping, make a plan to exercise regularly or just factor in more sleep and rest in your life.

2. Use mental closure. Sometimes we can get relief by mentally putting the past behind us. This is especially helpful for EBV treatment if there is nothing that you can do now to change things. You can say to yourself, “I cannot change the past. What has happened, has happened. I am now going to face forward in my life and make a new start and make the most of where I am now.”

3. Give someone else the worry. Yes, sometimes you can delegate. Is it really your problem? Make sure that you are not worrying about something that is not your business. Sometimes you can pass the situation on to someone more senior than yourself. You can always ask God to help with an issue and, after doing what you are able, leave the matter with Him. Prayer has been found to help deal with stress and illness.

4. Assign worrying to a future time. A famous quote is, “Do not be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will care for itself.” Take one day at a time. This is especially important when EBV treatment is a long term commitment.

5. Get it out of your head. I once talked to a patient who was being hurt by worry at work. He got great relief from doing a simple thing. Before leaving for home, he opened his desk drawer and imagined pouring all his work worries from out of his head into this drawer. He then closed the drawer and did not open it and worry about what was in it until he came to work the next day. Writing things down is also a great help to many during EBV treatment.

6. “Count your blessings”. Neutralise worry by using gratitude as an antidote. Make a list of things that you are grateful for. Maybe say “thank you” to someone for what they have done for you. During EBV treatment little things like the sun shining, the birds singing, a relaxing bath or a soothing soup are things you might be grateful for.

7. Consider a “worst case scenario”. This can help by stopping the mind from trying to analyse in the subconscious what this dreaded worse case scenario is. What is the worst case scenario? Is it really as bad as you have been thinking? Or is it worse? Now that you know what it is, is there anything you can do that would help you not to worry about it? This may include practical things or mental decisions or it may be in the spiritual realm. I recall talking to a Maori woman about her cancer. The worst case scenario was a difficult process of dying. She already had pain. But she did not show any worry. She had found help in the spiritual realm that had alleviated her fears.

8. Distract yourself. You can avoid worrying by doing something else. Get your mind focused on something positive. Maybe get out in the garden. Maybe do a small job. Maybe talk to a friend. During EBV treatment watching funny or uplifting videos can be a great source of distracting yourself from your symptoms.

9. Help someone else. This can give a satisfaction and enjoyment that removes worry.

10.Prioritise. Writing down or making a mental list of priorities can assist our mental health by giving us a framework and a feeling of being organised in what we are doing.
Your EBV treatment plan should include tips to reduce stress and worry. For further information and guidance on natural EBV treatment please refer to the e-book “Nature’s Amazing Mononucleosis Cures” by qualified naturopath Elizabeth Noble.

Fortunately there are some healing herbs that can help. Let’s have a look at the most popular herbs for a mononucleosis sore throat.

Myrrh

Myrrh is an ancient arid climate plant originating from the Middle East and North Africa. Myrrh extracts have been shown to enhance the efficiency of white blood cells in killing bacteria, viruses and fungi. It has a direct anti-microbial effect. Myrrh is one of the strongest herbs for treating mononucleosis sore throat and secondary throat infections like strep. It is best used as a tincture at about 3 ml, three times a day. It has a good safety record.

Sage and Thyme

Sage and thyme are strong antiseptics that are effective for mononucleosis sore throat. Sage is renowned for soothing inflammation of the mouth like a red throat, sore gums and mouth ulcers. As well as thyme, it makes a soothing gargle for a mononucleosis sore throat.

Thyme is an excellent cough remedy as it helps remove phlegm from the throat and respiratory tract. When I was a student working part time at a health food shop, I came down with a particularly painful, sore throat. It felt like I was swallowing razor blades every time I talked or swallowed. In desperation I made myself a hot tea of dried sage and thyme which I sipped throughout the day. To my amazement my sore throat had eased by the end of the day and even though the next day I had organised a sick day off, my symptoms were totally gone!

Goldenseal

Goldenseal is well known for its antibiotic and immune-stimulating properties. It helps dry and cleanse the mucous membranes, so is good for a mononucleosis sore throat that involves mucus. Evidence shows that goldenseal stimulates the macrophages that engulf and destroy viruses and bacteria. Goldenseal is a safe herb but can raise blood pressure so should not be taken in those with high blood pressure.

Olive leaf extract

The drinking of olive leaf tea has been done for many centuries by Middle Eastern cultures to treat disorders such as coughs, sore throat, cystitis, fever and gout. As it is a mild astringent, poultices were also made of the olive leaves to treat boils, rashes, warts and other skin problems.

Olive leaf extract can be helpful in the treatment of a mononucleosis sore throat as well as the common cold, flu, cold sores (herpes), ear infections, eye infections, nose and throat infections, impetigo, pink eye, parasites, and a host of bacterial, viral and fungal infections.

The main constituent of olive leaf is the phytochemical oleuropein, which has a powerful antimicrobial effect. It also has the ability to interfere with critical amino acid production essential for viruses. It can even directly penetrate infected cells and stop viruses from replicating.

Olive Leaf Extract is nontoxic, but when killing too many pathogens too quickly, a “die off” or Herxheimer’s reaction may occur – which can be experienced as flu-like symptoms, loose stools, nausea, headaches, tiredness or a skin rash. A reaction like this will only last a day or so, and can be minimised or avoided by starting at a low dose and gradually increasing.

Herbs are a good starting point for treating a mononucleosis sore throat.

Homeopathy is a form of natural medicine that has been used safely for centuries. It has a big following in Europe, India, Latin America and Russia, and there is a growing interest in western countries. Homeopathy for glandular fever(Epstein Barr virus or mononucleosis) is showing promising results especially in children and babies who are often unable to swallow other supplements.

Homeopathic remedies are based on the principle that “like cures like”. They revolve around the observation that substances that cause symptoms in healthy people, can actually help sick people, if given in dilute amounts.

For example, a respiratory infection which involves burning and watery eyes can be treated with a homeopathic remedy called Allium copa, which is made from onions (cutting onions normally causes teary, burning eyes in healthy people). The theory is that when you take a remedy that matches the symptoms of your illness, it stimulates your own innate healing ability.

Homeopathy for glandular fever relies on remedies made from plants, minerals or animals. The active substances are diluted in a solution of water or alcohol, then diluted again and again – sometimes hundreds of times. Because of this dilution, homeopathic remedies are not toxic. They are safe for babies and young children.

Many of the antimicrobial homeopathics are based on some of the anti microbial herbs like Echinacea and Thuja. In the acute stages of glandular fever, Belladonna is often prescribed to treat fever and a dry, red throat. It is often used for the first 12 – 24 hours. Ferum phosphorica and Kali muriaticum are then alternated every hour to alleviate fever, painful cough, swollen tonsils and night sweats.

Other homeopathy for glandular fever remedies include Phytolacca, for weakness and restlessness with swollen lymph glands, or Gelsemium for dullness, dizziness, drowsiness and headache.

You can buy homeopathy for glandular fever from your health food shop. For a more comprehensive remedy it is worthwhile seeing an experienced homeopath who will take a detailed health history and prescribe a particular remedy for your individual needs.

Epstein Barr virus causes may include stress, low immunity, malnourishment, vitamin D deficiency or a chronic underlying disease. It is now believed that mold is an immune suppressant that may tip the scales in allowing EBV (mono or glandular fever) to take hold.
Here’s an interesting article on the dangers of mold written by Dr Mercola – an American alternative practitioner:

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/09/03/molds-making-you-ill.aspx

If you think one of your EBV causes may be mold then there is a lot you can do to boost your immunity and reduce your exposure to mold.

Garlic is famous for its anti microbial properties. It is especially effective for mononucleosis treatment (also known as Epstein Barr virus or glandular fever).

Garlic was used by the ancient Egyptians to treat infections and wounds, by the Greeks and Romans for tumours, wounds and infection, and by the Chinese for fatigue, infections and tumours. In both World Wars it was used in wounds to stop infection, where no other antiseptics were available. It saved thousands of lives helping troops recover from typhus and dysentery and preventing gangrene.

Research shows that garlic oil contains a sulphur compound called allicin which has strong anti microbial properties – perfect for mononucleosis treatment. It can slow the growth or kill more than 60 species of fungi, more than 20 species of bacteria, and many viruses.

When garlic is consumed as a food, a sulphur-type odour can be smelt on the breath or skin as the garlic metabolites are excreted. The recommended dosage is 1-3 cloves a day – preferably raw. Those with a sensitive stomach may need to cook the garlic slightly or use the enteric coated capsules. The odourless garlic capsules may not be as effective as the active compounds may be lessened. If you are worried about the garlic smell on your breath you can chew on a sprig of parsley to take the smell away.

The other option I recommend during mononucleosis treatment, which makes ingestion of garlic a bit easier is to make up ¼ cup each of apple cider vinegar, honey and soy sauce. Pour into a screw top jar and fill to the top with as many peeled garlic cloves as can fit. Alternatively fill a screw top jar with peeled garlic cloves and cover with olive oil. You can take 1 teaspoon of these mixtures every 1 – 4 hours during mononucleosis treatment. These liquids can also be used as dressings on salads or vegetables in everyday cooking. They will last in the fridge for a few weeks after making.

For babies or young children who can’t tolerate garlic or take tablets, a garlic poultice (or compress), can be effective for mononucleosis treatment. Simply crush a clove of garlic, wrap it in gauze and tape it to the soles of the feet. It is a good idea to oil the soles of the feet with some olive oil first, because direct contact with the garlic may irritate the skin. The garlic oil will be absorbed into the blood stream and help fight the infection.

When my boys were younger, I would apply garlic compresses to the soles of their feet at bedtime. By morning, they might have had a slight garlic odour, but the infection had always improved.

Garlic is generally very safe but in some people can cause heartburn or gas when ingested. Because it has a blood-thinning effect it should be used with caution for those on anticoagulant medication or those undergoing surgery.

Garlic for mononucleosis treatment is a safe, cost effective option for those struggling with this nasty virus.
