Living with CEBV for 2 years!
Hi Elizabeth, the 14 year old child from Hertfordshire England you mention in your study was my daughter, if you require any more information about her case that may be helpful for you or anybody else going through this awful virus please dont hesitate to contact me. We have had three medical experts look into her case since her passing in May 2007, the outcome was Aimee was a tradegy, she was just very unlucky the virus passed to her liver and completely devastated her whole system. Her post mortem could find no reason for this or for the spleen rupture. From arriving at the hospital to her death was six hours, it was agreed that whatever hospital in this country she would have arrived at, the outcome would have unfortunately been the same.
Hi! Im a 19 year old living in the U.S. and I was just recently diagnosed with Epstein Barr Disease after weeks of tests and failed treatments. While my daily routines haven’t much changed, I find myself easily fatigued and just in a general feeling of malaise. To overcome the fatigue, my doctor suggested adding at least an extra hour of sleep to my nightly routine, adding more fresh fruits and veggies to my diet, and exercising daily. Thus far, ive seen minimal change. Is there anything else I can do?
Hi Alison,
Thanks for your post. I am sorry to hear you have been suffering
with fatigue and malaise. These symptoms are common
after mono.
Your priority should be to repair your adrenal glands with magnesium,
vitamin C and the B complex. The omega 3 oils like those
found in fish oils have also be shown in research trials to help fatigue.
A high protein / low carb diet free of sugar and refined carbohydrates
will help.
If your symptoms persist then consider doing a liver cleanse. The liver
is often sluggish or congested in cases of ongoing fatigue.
I hope this helps.

Hi Elizabeth,
Although I never have done this before, I used a lip gloss tester in sephora. It was not a busy store so little traffic. Noone used it immediately before me but may have in the hours before. I briefly touched the wand with my lips and immediate wiped it off. I now have mono. I have not been kissing or sharing food or drink with people.
How long can ebv survive in lip gloss? If some survives how likely is it that the virus transmits? Is it more likely that I got it from touching something and then my nose or mouth or by a sneeze or cough than by the tester?
Thank you.
J
Hi Jill,
Thanks for your post. The Epstein Barr virus is a fragile virus that cannot survive for long out of the human body. Unless someone had used
the lip gloss only a few minutes before you, then I doubt you picked up the infection from that. It is more likely that an infected person sneezed
or coughed near you and you picked it up from them.
I hope you start feeling better soon.
Elizabeth
Elizabeth,
Thank you for your reply. People can pick up the virus from a cough or sneeze from a random person with respiratory droplets small enough that a perosn would not feel a spray?
You think that is more likely than the lip gloss? I know noone else used in the minutes before I did.
I read that the virus can survive hours out of the body. Is that your understanding? Does that mean in a weakened state such that it is not likely to be contagious?
My ENT also suggested a handshake or touching something just sneezed on and then touching my nose.
I appreciate you advice.
J
Hi Jill,
Thanks for your post.
It is my understanding that the Epstein Barr virus is a very fragile
virus that does not survive for long outside the human body.
According to the Merck manual it is not very contagious.
(Unlike the flu virus which can survive a few hours and can cause
epidemics because it is so hardy). I have seen a post by Dr Greene
saying it survives a few hours out of the body but I assume it
is in a weakened state.
Yes you can get it from droplets from a sneeze or cough (which you
may not feel) or you can transfer it to your face if your hand has touched a
surface that has recently been contaminated.
Personally I think it is unlikely that you got it from the lip gloss unless
someone had used it recently.

Hi,
I have read all the posts on your site. I have searched the internet for weeks also. I am not finding a few answers so I wanted to ask you.
First off we eat a salad every day, a fruit smoothy I make every day, and mostly organic foods. We take flax oil, acidophilus, and a multivitamin, and vit c 100 mg and some extra b vitamins.
My daughter got sick back in december with swollen lymph nodes and exhaustion dizziness and headaches and a sore throat. It wasn’t until 6 months later that the doctor did blood work and it showed positive epstein bar with high levels and a negative mono. So the doctor said she probably had a positive mono recently. She said to rest for the summer. We did that but her levels of her white count are still low. She is 13. Her white count is still only 3.6 or 3600. She is mildy better with her energy level and nolonger has as many bouts with dizziness but she does have muscle pain in her neck and shoulders and back and the low white count still bothers me. I was going to try the epson salt bath like you suggested and maybe some ginger tea although we typically do peppermint teas. Do you have any other thoughts for us to try and get her white count back up? Does this sound typical to you lasting now 8 months with her being so young? Thank you so much, Bethany
Hi Bethany,
Thanks for your post. Sorry to hear your daughter has been ill for so long. It is not typical, but the virus can linger for months in some people.
You have added some great nutrients and healthy foods to her diet. I would also be looking at boosting her white blood cell count with a
higher dose of vitamin C (3 g a day), zinc (90mg) and an immune stimulant like olive leaf extract. For her fatigue and muscle pain, extra magnesium
would be of benefit. The ginger tea and Epsom salt baths can bring temporary relief.
If her back and neck pain does not improve, then it may be useful to see a chiropractor or osteopath who may be able to assist.
I hope this helps.
Elizabeth
pls…….. help me cure my liver by your natural remedies. i have spent much on a whole lot and i just can’t with stand it. so pls send me your email add so guide me in the natural therapy. i dont want to consult any doctor in my home country becos they are actually the cause of it. i was made to take prednisone drug with a high dose for what i would say not a severe hives and another doctor realising this had to reduce it. this medications has gone this way affecting me and Was diagnose on hepatitis. i have been battling this for almost a year and i want you to email me and guide me with a natural therapy to effectively heal me.

Hi Roland,
Sorry to hear you have had problems with your liver. A good naturopath or holistic doctor is important to help diagnose and monitor your condition.
Natural approaches which may be of benefit include milk thistle, globe artichoke, anti-inflammatory nutrients like vitamin C and zinc, a fresh food
diet and plenty of pure water. A regular liver cleanse will optimise your results.
There is an excellent e-book I often refer my patients to called “Hepatitis ABC Remedy”. It would be a good starting point for your condition.

hello elizabeth i have bought milk thistle herbs. it was a dried leafs in a pack. and also had pumpkin seeds as well for the zinc. i also bought ASTRAGALUS and ECHINACEA.
i want to know how i can use them.
pls guide me on how to use them.
For the pumpkin seeds what will be the dose for a day if am measuring with a teaspoon?
……………………………..
Also the milk thistle can i blend it in a powder state and how do i use it if am to measure it with a teaspoon as well?
…………………………..
Can blend the herbs in their state to powder state so that i know the right amount am using at each time in terms of dose.
…………………
again can i use the three herbs together at the same time.?
i have started blending vegetable juice every morning. red beet, 1/4 cabagge, 1 apple, 2 clove of garlic, hand full of parsely, onions, (3) carrots and dandelion leaves if get some fresh ones. is it a god start.
Hi Roland,
Thanks for your update. Glad you’ve started on the fresh juice and herbs. Yes the herbs can be taken together. The pumpkin seeds are good too – I would be doing a tablespoon a day.
Dried herbs are best infused. Usually you add 1-2 teaspoons of dried herbs per cup of water (unless directed otherwise on the packaging). Here is some information on hot and cold infusions:
Infusions: Usual Method for Most Dried Herbs
Infusions are a process of soaking herbs in water for a longer period of time than making a general herbal tea.
Hot Infusion : To make an infusion, boil water. Allow the boiled water to cool for a minute or two – this ensures the herbs will not be burnt/scorched. Usually use one or two heaped teaspoonsful of dried herbs per cup of water. Cover and let steep for 10- 30 minutes, strain and cool. Are taken as teas, added to the bath, used on furniture and floors, and to anoint the body. Seeds, resins, nuts, barks, roots and powdered herbs may be used in infusions, but to extract most goodness from these, will require to be simmered.
Cold infusion : Steep in cold water or cold milk for several hours. Wet, mashed herbs can be used internally as a tea or as poultices on the body.
I hope this gets you started.
Elizabeth
oh okay so i can blend them together in a powdered state and take it.?
……………………
the daily dose too will be one cup in a day. hope am right.
following research i have been doing. i found some information on MACROBIOTICS?
It calls for living a balanced life based on the two complementary, but opposite, natural forces of contraction and expansion. These forces are often referred to by their well-known and convenient oriental names of YIN AND YANG.
Yin is the force of expansion and yang is the force of contraction. These two complementary forces rule everything in this world. Think of a beating heart. Heart beats are actually nothing more that an oscillation between the two forces of contraction (yang) and expansion (yin). So are our breathing lungs. Even when we walk, our movement is due to the synchronized contraction and expansion of our varied muscles.
Why do some foods propagate an infection and others stop it?
Sodium and calcium are yang while potassium and magnesium are yin. Yang elements, being contractive, prevent and constrain bacteria from multiplying, while yin elements, being expansive, promote and enhance bacterial multiplication.
Therefore, foods rich in sodium and calcium, kill bacteria and stop an infection while foods that are rich in potassium and magnesium, increase the infection. This is a simple scientific example of macrobiotics.
My experience with my own diet and with thousands of patients who have visited my consultation office over the last few years from 32 different countries has shown me time and time again that sodium-rich and calcium-rich vegetables are the best antibiotics in the world. They are better that any antibiotic chemicals man has ever invented.

by this information guide me on the foods (fruits, vegetables and seeds) that are rich in sodium and calcium. so that i can focus much on it when choosing meals for the day.
THANK YOU.
Hi Roland,
Yes the powdered state blended is fine. I would be doing 1 or 2 cups a day.
Regards
Elizabeth
by the information i sent u previously guide me on the foods (fruits, vegetables and seeds) that are rich in sodium and calcium. so that i can focus much on it when choosing meals for the day.
Hi Roland,
Your calcium-rich foods are dairy foods, sardines, salmon (with bones), green leafy vegetables, almonds, figs, kelp, prunes, tofu and calcium-enriched soy milk. Sodium is found in most foods. High amounts are in sea salt.
Remember a balance of sodium and potassium is needed for good health. The same goes for calcium and magnesium. In my experience Epstein Barr patients need these nutrients to recover.
Let me know how you go.

Elizabeth, The vitamins and epson salt you suggested had great results. Within a few weeks she regained 50% of her energy level and now at almost 4 weeks she is now at about 85% which is just a miraculous change from when I first wrote to you.
The doctor won’t check her white count for another 6 months.
Thank you so much for alll your advice, Bethany
Hi Elizabeth
I would be very grateful if you could give me your opinion of my recent health.
About 2 years ago, I suffered greatly with Glandular Fever which carried on for approximately 6 months. It was only after numerous blood tests that they found the virus was present. I am a Type 1 Diabetic which obviously does not help the matter. I suffered ecspecially with joint and muscle pain.
It has been 2 weeks today that I have been suffering with joint pain. Especially in the upper half of my body: wrists, elbows, upper back. I was quite fatigued last week which seemed to be getting better the second week. When I wake up in the morning, every joint ‘pops’ which I read is the cause of air and nothing serious. However, I remember this from two years ago when the same thing happened.
I have today received the bloodtests back from my doctor which came back all good except my blood sugar which was high and has been for some time now.
I am really scared that I will have to go through the same amount of testing as last time, and in every instance the doctors telling me that they haven’t been able to find anything.
Can you help?
Cynthia
Hi Cynthia.
Thanks for your post. Once you have had glandular fever, the virus remains in your body in a latent form and can re-activate when you are run down or stressed. It is possible that this is what you are experiencing now.
Blood tests don’t always pick up a re-activation of the virus, only that you have had the virus in the past.
For my patients with similar symptoms I prescribe high dose magnesium, fish oils, vitamin C and zinc with good results. Epsom salt baths and plenty of rest will help. With your high blood sugar, I would try a higher
protein / low carb diet and gentle exercise. This is also an anti-inflammatory diet which helps with joint pain.
I hope this information gets you started.
Kind Regards
Elizabeth
HI, ELIZABETH
HOW R U DOING. IS BEEN I HAVE BEEN ON A COLON CLEANSING FOR A MONTH NOW WHILE. M GUD BY HIS GRACE.

I just finished reading The H-Factor, and was wondering if there is an easy way to drop homocysteine levels? I have seen a couple products that claim to help lower homocysteine levels. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Tristan,
Thanks for your post. Yes nutrients like vitamin B12, folate and B6 can lower homocysteine levels effectively. Diet and lifestyle improvements can also help. The H Factor is a good starting point for information.

Useful ideas here. I am still looking for supplemental data on natural health and would love any suggestions. Thanks a lot!
Hi Demetria,
Thanks for your message. If you need further information on Epstein Barr / mono then I suggest you have a look through my e-book which covers everything from nutrients, herbs, homeopathics, diet, stress management, graded exercise and liver cleansing. If you need general health data then mercola.com is a good place to start.

Hi Elizabeth, My son has just been diagnosed (by blood test) with glandular fever, cytomegalovirus and mumps all together. Why do you think this has happened and what can I do? I presume we must build his immune system and give him lots of good nursing care: lots of fluid, rest and healthy food.
Can you help us with any suggestions.

Hi Elizabeth,
Well they rechecked Riley’s wbc and it is still low. She has good days but then has weak, tired, foggy days and now has a new symptoms of painful joints. I think after a year this has been hard for her to handle. We have added extra b12 but otherwise she still is about the same. I had no idea it could go on this long. Her pediatrician said maybe it turned into chronic fatigue syndrome but she is only 14. We still do the daily fruit smoothies and salads and keep up with the supplements. The only other thing I can think of is acupuncture. Currently she is waiting for an appointment with a hematologist to review her bloodwork and let us know her thoughts. We think she’ll say just wait longer. Thanks for your help, bethany
Hi Bethany,
Thanks for your post. Sorry to hear Riley is still not 100%. It must be very worrying for you.
The nature of recovery from mono is to have a few good days followed by a low or bad day.
I would focus on keeping her on the basic supplements (especially vitamin C, zinc, magnesium, B complex and the omega 3s). Are you still doing the Epsom salt baths – they can help relieve the joint pains.
Riley’s diet sounds good – keep it high protein / low carb which will help minimise inflammation.
I hope Riley feels better soon. It is unusual for the virus to last this long, particularly in children.
Elizabeth
Hi Christine,
Sorry to hear your son has been diagnosed with glandular fever, cytomegalovirus and mumps – what a nasty combination. It usually means his immune system is suppressed and struggling to keep
infections at bay.
Yes plenty of rest, fluids and a fresh food diet featuring vegetables, fruits and quality protein are essential. I would be looking at boosting his immunity with some supplements like vitamin C,
zinc, vitamin A, and a herb like olive leaf extract. Keep him at home until he is feeling 100%. If he returns to school or work too early he can suffer a relapse.
Best Wishes

Hello, I was researching natural remedies for Sarc and found your site. I started reading about the Aden protocol and was inspired to find out it is an all natural approach to the disease. My husband was dx with sarc in 04. Lymphatic sarc in stage 3. We spent 3 yrs in traditional medical treatment with no improvement and then started seeking alternative remedies.
Through tons of trial and error (we did not know about Aden Protocol)
He has been in remission naturally for the past 20 mo. I would like to know what remedies, herbs are suggested in the aden protocol and see if we could talk. Thanks, I am really excited to see that there are more people teaching and sharing natural remedies to a very misunderstood disease.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Dani
Hi Dani,
Thanks for your post. Great to hear your husband is in remission from sarcoidosis. Natural therapies can offer a lot in reducing inflammation and repairing tissue in this nasty disease.
Like your web site explains, antioxidants are a very powerful therapy in treating sarc. With my patients I also use a lot of enzymes, anti-inflammatory foods, liver and gastrointestinal cleanses and emotional support. The Aden protocol recommends an alkalising diet rich in fresh vegetables and fruit. I tend to recommend a similar diet with quality protein to help balance immunity and re-build muscle mass.
Keep up the good work!
Best Wishes
Elizabeth
Hi there Elizabeth,
Wondering if you might be able to offer some guidance? I will speak with my GP and Obstetrician about this anyway, but am curious as to your take on the matter.
My best friend has just been diagnosed with Glandular Fever. I have EBV antibodies, as I had a bout of it many years back, in Year 12.
Problem is, I have a 2 year old, and am 28 weeks pregnant with my second child. I am incredibly concerned about the risk of EBV being passed on by her, not only to my 2 year old, but more so, to a newborn.
What would you suggest is the appropriate course of action in this case?
Thanking you,
Jade
Hi Jade,
Thanks for your post. Since you have had glandular fever before and have the EBV antibodies then you and your unborn baby cannot pick it up from your friend. By the time your baby is born your friend will be over the acute infection so there is less likelihood of the infection being passed on. Because the infection can be shed from the throat for months after the initial infection then it may be safest to avoid letting your friend kiss the newborn baby. In the meantime your 2 year old may pick up the infection especially if they have shared food and drinks or kissed your best friend. The incubation period can be several weeks so there is no way of knowing at this point of time. It might be a good idea to give your child a course of children’s echinacea and vitamin C to ensure that if they do pick up the infection then it won’t be serious. Most children do not experience symptoms like adults – more like a mild cold.
Elizabeth
Elizabeth- I have read through your website over the past 6 months, and found it very helpful and encouraging. I was diagnosed with mono back in May, got better, pushed myself very hard for 2 months, and had a relapse in October. I have taken it very easy since then (8 weeks), and I am starting to feel better. However, I have noticed that my body temperature is consistently low- unfortunately, I’m not sure what it was before mono, but I’m pretty sure it was higher than the 96-97 area it is in now. I am trying to get my life back together- balanced with rest and play. When I go out, I do not drink very much alcohol (I used to cosume quite a lot), and I used to work out a lot, however, I have been taking it easy and trying to ease back into activities. I am terrified of another relapse. The only symptoms I have are the low body temperature, and a very slight prolonged sore throat (goes away with water, or gargling) and slight fatigue. Are these related to EBV, and if so, any suggestions on what could mitigate these issues. Thank you for providing such a valuable resource online.
Jackson
Hi Jackson,
Thanks for your post. Glad you are enjoying the website. Sorry you have been struggling with mono. It is a latent virus that can relapse if you push yourself too hard, have major stress in your life, eat poorly or are sleep deprived.
Your low body temperature can indicate your thyroid is involved. It is worth taking your under-arm temperature on rising for 3 or 4 days. If your temperature is consistently below 97 degrees F (about 36.4 degrees C) then your thyroid is probably sluggish and contributing to your fatigue. With your symptoms I would start on some high dose B complex, magnesium, omega 3 oils and vitamin C to help both your adrenals and thyroid. Aim for a high protein fresh food diet, plenty of water and adequate rest. If your symptoms do not improve then it is worth seeing a good holistic doctor or naturopath to see what is going on.
Best Wishes.
Elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth,
i have very tough half a year since mono got into my life in January this year. I had very rough illnes, which evoke rather HIV than mono as my doctor with me thought. So I spent most of the time with lot of stress basicaly. It took gradually:
- fever cca 2 days in first week (wasnt further)
- month random pimples and random achy muscles and week, random achy tummy and random unusual stool (soften but not typical diarrhoeia)
- than other week swollen glands on the neck, night sweating and one day itchy rush on the chest
- other week sore throat with coating, swollen tongue as I had dry mouth as a result
- few days achy muscles and bones, strong headache
- swollen caliculus gustatorius on the tounge
- the swollen glands really achy on the neck
- at the end swollen glands everywhere for 2-3 days, really achy tummy, fatigue, lost 4 kgs of weight
this all lasted during January
Since this event and my health problems I was undergoing tests for sexual diseases and blood figures. I had increased ALT, AST, global bilurbin. After 3 months when STDs tests remained thanks God negative including HIV1,2. My doctor sent me to immunology where I was taken in November, they have done whole panel of immuno spots in and discovered EBV. VCA IgG: 3,9, IgM: 1,8, EBNA: 4,7, EA: 0,6. Blood figures are back in normal range.
So doctor told me “youre lucky definitely better than HIV”. I got Isoprinosine for 2 weeks and other 2 weeks I am getting vitamins injections Milgamma N.
I am getting back to normal life with no problems with tideness or fatigue but I am still experiencing swollen caliculus gustatorius on the tounge and achy glands on the neck – not swollen but pain and its really unpleasent day by day.
Doctors are not able to advise me what to do, my blood tests are good so I could normaly spend Christmas holidays, just do not drink alocohol too much and take the vitamins. So this is my story.
Can you please advise me what can I do special to ease the ache of neck glands at least?
Thank you
Best wishes from Prague and Happy new Year!
Charles
Hi Elizabeth,
I have cirrhosis as a result of long term HCV, I wanted to get hold of your eBook – The Liver Cirrhosis Cure – but the onsite links appear to be broken – do you know where I can get a copy?
Many Thanks
Dario
Hi Dario,
Thanks for your post. Sorry that link was broken. It is not my e-book but a colleague called Duncan Capicchiano from Melbourne.
If you can’t get onto him I have heard of another similar natural approach at:

Hi Charles,
Sorry to hear you have had such a rough time with your mono. For your painful neck glands I would recommend you try some natural anti-inflammatories
like vitamin C, zinc, fish oils, ginger, turmeric and cayenne pepper to reduce the inflammation. Massage, gentle exercise and hot compresses on the
neck can also help. If your symptoms persist then a liver cleanse may be of benefit.

Hi Elizabeth,
I am a 59 yer old female who has been diagnosed w/ EBV. I had mono 20 years ago and get the same sympotms about once a year usually in the fall. I never had swolllen glands but have extreme fatigue, chest pain and difficulty brething. Have you heard of these symptoms before?
I have cut out sugar from my diet….what else can I do to help this fatigue? Ihave been down for a month with a handful of good days.
thank you,
Mary
Hi Mary,
Thanks for your post. Sorry to hear you are experiencing recurring symptoms of fatigue, chest pain and breathing problems. I would recommend you see your doctor to make sure there are no other reasons like heart or lung problems. It is possible that these symptoms are caused by EBV. Magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin C, Co Q10, gentle exercise and a pure fresh food diet may help. Good that you are off the sugar – keep it up.
Best Wishes
Elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth,
thank you for your advice. It helped me a lot, so glands are still bit enlarged but do not hurt. However since last week I have achey stomach all days long and few days I feel blankly achey testicles. Got controloc from my doctor but it seems it does not help. Well everyday I am asking myself, if it will be once well, just my old good myself
yours sincerely
Charles
After one full year of mono my daughter is finally better. Her White Count is normal and her ANA is finally negative. She has regained most of her strength and her joints are much better. We switched pediatricians and are very happy with our current one. I wanted to thank you though for all your advice because I believe the supplements that you suggest really helped her. With out them I don’t think she would have had any strength at all.
Thanks again, Bethany
